Volunteering

Abercorn's volunteering and work placement programmes play a a big part in helping our young people become more aware of the world of work and of the responsibilities they will have when they leave school.  There are placements arranged every year for S4-S6 pupils with a wide range of destinations available.

One popular approach is to encourage senior pupils to become Sports Leaders and coach our younger pupils.  Over the years the sports leader programme has proved to a be success with increasing numbers of pupils looking to take on the role.   Sports Leaders are also encouraged to organise and run events for different year groups which gives them a great deal of responsibility within the school environment.  Some of these young people move on to completing coaching courses at college and find work in this area.

Our pupils also engage in placements outwith the sporting field.  This year our S5 pupil Rosie has been completing a work placement with Indepen-dance - an organisation that promotes inclusion and participlation through dance.  Rosie has been totally committed to the placement and shown great enthusiasm over the past 3 months.  Her dance worker Ruth had this to say about her:

'Rosie has shown great enthusiasm from day one.  She has really engaged with the participants and is supportive and encouraging.  I feel Rosie has become more confident and continues to show great progress in the classes'

Another destination is Woodside Nursery where our young people help out with arranging activities for the children.  Our 6th year pupil, Alistair started a work placement at Woodside in 2016 and staff were instantly impressed with his positive attitude and work ethic.  He has since returned to the nursery, completing 3 placements and building his skills in childcare.
